2010 Competition Results

June 4-5 2010
Beltway BBQ Showdown
Upper Marlboro, MD

Watkins Regional Park , just outside of Washington DC , was the third location for this 4th year contest and in our opinion was the best so far. The teams were situated in a parking lot that offered some nice shady spots for the teams that began arriving as early as Thursday evening. Jonathan Jones, the contest organizer has grown this event from 16 teams in 2007 to its present size of 39 entries.

The field included some new teams as well as some of the most seasoned in the Mid Atlantic region. The weather threatened at times, but the BBQ karma kept the rain away and the most the teams had to deal with was the heat, which wasn’t all that bad, reaching 95 degrees under our canopy during turn-ins. At least there was a bit of a breeze at times to make things bearable.

This years Grand Champion was 3 Eyz BBQ, who also took first place in both the rib and brisket category. The contest Reserve Grand Champ was Texas Ribs and BBQ. The top spot in chicken went to Chix, Swine, and Bovine with Smokey Bottom Boys bringing home the bacon and the first place iron in pork. Congrats to all that were called!

Bel Air BBQ Bash
Bel Air, MD

Our hometown contest, the Bel Air BBQ Bash was held August 13-14 in the town of Bel Air . It is one of my favorites, although, we have never done well here, there is always a chance that could change. We had a lot of folks; friends and neighbors stop by to see us throughout the entire weekend. For me, the highlight was the Tailgater Challenge on Friday night. This is the contest that started it all for me back in 2004.This year they had 33 teams cook the event, one of which was my son Sam. He and his team Young Guns took home 2nd place honors. And as for our luck changing, no danger, we finished 14th without a call, oh well, we’ll get em next year! Way to go Sam and Megan!

New Holland Summer Fest
New Holland, PA

I can’t believe it is the end of August already and our contest season is drawing to a close. The Summer Fest in New Holland PA is our favorite contest of the year and it is easy to see why. A picturesque location, well organized, spacious set-up spots, friendly people and great weather combined to make this “the” event of the year for the WATG? crew. Oh, and did I mention a few dozen large steamed crabs, cold beer, sweet corn and sliced tomatoes for dinner Thursday night in the park, mmmmmmm, it don’t git no better than this, and a 7th place overall finish in a strong 72 team field ain’t bad either.

Pork in the Park BBQ Festival

Salisbury, Maryland

April 16-17, 2010

After a long and snowy winter, everyone was ready to get back into the smoke. It looked like we were going to be a man down again due to an unforeseen last minute circumstance. I thought about running an add for help, but decided against it at the last minute. But then, for once, the BBQ Gods smiled upon us, (at least for the needing help part, no so much for the results part), gremlins be damned!

Smoke in the Valley
Green Lane, PA

This was to be the second year for this event and the field was almost double in size from the inaugural contest. The weatherman waffled all the preceding week on the possibility of rain or storms for Friday night. Despite a tornado warning as well as word that a funnel cloud had been spotted nearby, all we got was a little rain and some distant lightning and thunder, not too bad at all. The local VFD once again did a bang up job taking care of the cooks and promised to try and improve for next years event. Shawn, the contest organizer told me that he is just about to the max with 50 teams, so if you want in on this contest, you’d better get your entry fee in early next year, I know we’ll be back!

Keystone BBQ Classic
Harrisburg PA

The Keystone BBQ Contest in Harrisburg PA was our last planned outing for the year. We were the defending champs having taken our first Grand here last year. Would we rise to the occasion and give the rest of the field a run for their money? Or would we continue to wallow in mediocrity or possibly worse, you guessed it, we stunk the joint up. Oh well, only 6 months till Salisbury !
